Carmarthenshire County Council promoted Earth Day on April 22 this year through the Walk the Global Walk project.

Banners designed by pupils from Coedcae ( pictured is Ryan Morris Year 8 with his design) and Glan y Mor schools are being displayed at County Hall in Carmarthen and Llanelli Town Hall throughout the week in recognition of the importance of the climate  crisis and the need to reduce our environmental footprint.

To mark World Earth Day on Thursday, the council  held its first ever Children’s Climate Conference involving 40 pupils, many of them Global Goalkeepers, from 14 primary schools. The virtual event was held in partnership with Carmarthen Town Council, Dolen Cymru Lesotho, Wales Centre for International Affairs, Size of Wales, and Keep Wales Tidy,  It featured a quiz, a case study from Ysgol Pum Heol, a chance to share experiences and pick up new ideas.

Each school carried out research into the impact of climate change on a given country and  prepared a special news bulletin to share on the day. A lot of work went into these and the results from our budding news reporters were fantastic. The event proved very popular with the participants . "This conference really made us think and realise we all have a part to play in tacking climate change" said pupils from Stebonheath Primary School.

All the schools who participated in the conference are Eco Schools with many of the pupils participating being leading members of their school’s Eco committee. Carmarthenshire is one of the authorities with the highest number of Platinum and Green Flag schools in Wales and has been involved in the programme for 27 years.
