Our work on SDG 16 this year builds on Wales' long heritage of internationalism and on the work of the successful Wales for Peace initiative. Pictured above is the Senedd, seat of the Welsh Parliament. Below is the National Temple for Peace in Cardiff founded originally as a memorial to the fallen of World War 1 and dedicated to driving a national mission to build a better world for future generations. It is now home to our partners, Dolen Cymru Lesotho and the Wales Centre for International Affairs. We in Carmarthenshire County Council are delighted to be working with them to support 8 secondary schools and 10 primary schools here, 8 of whom are new to the project.
A total of 22 teachers participated in our training sessions on October 21 and 22, delivered virtually via Teams. Following an introduction to the Walk the Global Walk project, Jane Harries of Wales Centre for International Affairs shared highlights from our new resource pack which she did an enormous amount to create. We tried out some of the activities - not so easy to do virtually!- including a values contiunuum on conflict, a consience alley linked to climate justice in Lesotho, and a quiz about global inequality. Participants then heard from Elin Zych of Ysgol Parc y Tywyn and Rachel Evans of Ysgol Dyffryn Aman about their successful involvement in the Wales Peace Schools Scheme, an initiative with which all our Walk the Global Walk schools will be supported this year.
The training was very well-received with participants finding it informative, practical and even inspirational. Schools are looking forward to beginning teaching using the resource pack which many, including our education advisers, see as advocating the cross-curricular approach, critical thinking, and participatory learning fundamental to developing the new curriculum here in Wales.
